Near Fossil Lake, this specimen is from the Eocene, about 50 million years old. From an old find. The area these were dug is now closed to collectors. The fish is the catfish Astephus antiquus. It measures about 6 inches from tip to tip. The plate is about 6.8" by 5.7". The plate is unbroken, which is uncommon for this species. The plate weighs about 14.45 oz. You can easily see 3 barbels from the catfish. There was either some disarticulation of the head, or it was picked at by a predator.
