Description: Fine 18th/19th Century Chinese 'Turquoise & Aubergine' Glazed Biscuit Porcelain Figure of a Seated Guanyin. Exceptionally rare Turquoise and Aubergine Glazed Biscuit Porcelain figure of a 'Seated Guanyin' together with a carved and fitted 'Lotus-Form' Hardwood Base. A superb and finely detailed example, beautifully modelled with flowing robes, right leg raised and arms rested in the lap, one holding a prayer book. The face carrying an expression of calmness and serenity. The wooden base has been drilled at some point during its life, probably for the purpose of a lamp fitting. Most likely during the 1920s. GUANYINGuanyin is the Chinese translation of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Bodhisattvas are enlightened beings who chose to stay on earth as accessible examples for Buddhist faithful to follow. Originally depicted as a male or gender-neutral entity able to take on thirty-three manifestations, Avalokiteshvara is a compassionate savior who hears the woes of humankind, regardless of age, gender, or social class. However, in imperial China, Guanyin became increasingly cemented as a female figure. Similar to the Virgin Mary, Guanyin became a popular intercessor for humanity to understand divine salvation.
