Description: This is a rather rare engraving of Arundel Castle by Frederick William Hayes (New Ferry 1848 - London 1918). Size of Mount: 63cm x 50.5cm - Size of exposed engraving and paper: 51cm x 38cm There are some small tears and creases, and foxing in places, such as a light brown line that shows around the title area, it's in its original "vintage" green velum mount, which has some age-related markings and indentations on its surface, please see close up photos; yet it's important to appreciate its historic rarity, that despite these minor problems, it is still in better condition than the same type of engraving that can be found in the National Trust collections, - and would look great framed and hung in the right space. Frederick William Hayes was born at New Ferry Terrace, Lower Bebington, Wirral, Cheshire on 13 July 1848, eldest child of William Woolhouse Hayes (3 February 1812-20 August 1884), a tar distiller, and his wife Mary Pilkington née Cobb, who married at Carnarvon in Wales in 1847. In 1851, Frederick was a 2-year-old, living at Bebington with his parents, 37-year-old William and 36-year-old Mary, with a younger sibling, 1 year old Edwin, and they retained two servants, William and Mary went on to have two daughters. Frederick trained as an architect in Ipswich and then studied painting at Liverpool and in 1870 moved to London as a pupil to artist Henry Dawson (1811-1878) but in 1872, returned to Liverpool where he was the founder of the local Watercolour Society. An architect, painter, playwright, musician, and an historical author whose 'The Great Revolution of 1905' was one of his most notable works. About 1890 he turned his attention to illustration and over the next 20 years or so produced over 3,000 drawings mostly in black & white. Hayes exhibited at the Royal Academy 1872-1891 including 'Sunset on the Formby Sands' and 'Her Last Berth'. He married firstly at Chelsea in 1872, Ellen Bowe (1848-1881) and in 1881 he returned to live at 12 Linden Gardens, Chiswick, Brentford, London where he was living in 1881, a married artist with a 3-year-old daughter Minnie Chetwynd Hayes, who was born at Matlock, Derbyshire. He married secondly Lancashire in 1882, Eliza Stratford and in 1891, a 42-year-old artist, living at Westcroft Square, Hammersmith, London with his 32-year-old wife Eliza with two children Gladys Linden 8 and Gerald Ravenscourt 2. In 1911, still at the same address, with the addition of two more children Arthur Norman Chetwynd 13 and Enid Phyllis Ravenscourt 10. Frederick William Hayes was of 12 Westcroft Square, Ravenscourt Park when he died at 1 Heath Cottages, Hampstead, London on 7 September 1918.
