Description: Rare Creamware Childs Plate BIRDS NEST ~ ANIMAL BORDER Staffordshire England c 1820 This is lovely child's plate c1810-20. The plate measures 7-1/2 inches across, turned foot. Transfer printed in an earthy cinnamon brown with hand painted wisps of the enamels colors. The border is exceptional, with 6 press moulded animals -- running dogs, fox and monkey with handler -- brilliantly hand painted in brick red and other pratt colors. Intricate details, exquisitely applied. The plate was made to celebrate the birth or christening of a child or may have been given as a reward of merit and a gift for a special occasion. It most likely was made in the Staffordshire region of England in the early to mid-19th century. References and illustrations of these early child's plates can be found in Noel Riley's book Gifts for Good Children. The plate is in very good condition. Two tiny rim chips on the foot rim, as shown. No other chips, cracks, scratches or repairs. Minor typical firing imperfections: stilt marks and glaze grit on the foot rim, original to the making. The plate is whimsical yet elegant. It will make a wonderful display and a welcome addition to any collection of children's early wares or collection of early nursery and childrens wares. A prize possession for a good childs. Offered as is, as shown. Thank you for bidding!
