Description: ORIGINAL! RARE! CIVIL WAR UNION " MAJ. GENERAL CARL SCHURZ " BRADY PHOTO CDV 1863 CIVIL WAR UNION " MAJOR GENERAL CARL SCHURZ " MATHEW BRADY PHOTO CDV 1863 Carl Schurz (b.1828-d.1906) Prussian born ex-patriot was made a Brigadier in April 1862 to solidify the adminstration's support in the large, draftable German-American community. Without any military experience Schurz was given a division and performed adequately at 2nd Bull Run and was later promoted to Major General in March 1863 on thin credentials. Schurz's Division, composed mainly of ethnic soldiers, happened to be in the unlucky 11th Corps under O.O. Howard and stampeded in the Chancellorsville debacle. At Gettysburg, Schurz's "damn Dutch" essentially repeated the same retrograde maneuver to their universal discredit, although Howard must be held equally accountable.
