ARTIST STATEMENT "I am a ceramist and have been for over 40 years. As a Montanan born and raised in the western end of the state, I began ceramics under Lyndon Pomeroy when he taught at Northern Montana College and finished my undergraduate degree under Francis Senska and Jesse Wilber at Montana State University. I worked for David Shaner at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena before he left for his studio at Bigfork, Montana. After finishing graduate school at Alfred University, Alfred, New York, I began teaching ceramics in Iowa City, Iowa 1970. I have been teaching ceramics at the University of Iowa for the last 34 years and am currently Chair of Ceramics. We still maintain strong ties to Montana. My wife is an integral part of the studio and business of pottery, contributing a great deal to the success of my pots. The ceramics that I make is utilitarian, functional, and one of a kind. I make the clay body, glazes and do my own firing and marketing. My philosophy is to make the best work possible and to give it a personality that makes each piece meaningful to the purchaser and user. I don't make things that entertain, titillate, or mesmerize. I try very hard to make things that work well and add a “down to earth” positive quality to the life of the user."
