Description: “Blolo bian” male spirit spouse, carved of hardwood, with detailed coiffure gathered in two extended plaits and a short beard beneath chin. White beads adorn ankles and waist. Age crack on back. Deep dark brown burnished patina with some encrusted deposits on feet and base. A handwritten label underneath squared integral base reads, “Fetiche d’ancetre - Peuple Baoule, Cote d’Ivoire, cercle de Bouake. Ces statuettes etaient conservees dans de petites cases ... representant l’habitation du mort. Vers 1860 collection J P Zoline(?).” “Ancestor fetish - Baoule people, Ivory Coast, circle of Bouake.
