Description: This incredibly rare hardcover edition of Athēnaiōn Politeia: The Constitution of The Athenians by Livio Catullo Stecchini is a scholar's gem. Published by The Free Press, this 1st edition, 1st printing, is a significant work in the field of ancient history and metrology. It’s nearly impossible to find another hardcover copy of this book, with only later paperback releases available. The cover and binding are fully intact, and the pages are crisp and well-preserved! The front cover does show some slight spotting, but the internal pages remain unaffected. About the Author: Livio Catullo Stecchini was an Italian professor of ancient history. He wrote on the history of science, ancient weights and measures (metrology), and the history of cartography in antiquity. He is widely known as a defender of the theories of Immanuel Velikovsky and for his numerological theories about the dimensions of the Great Pyramids. Perhaps most notably, Stecchini wrote an extensive appendix for Peter Tompkins’ Secrets of the Great Pyramid on the relationship of ancient measures to the Great Pyramid. This is likely to live on as Stecchini's most recognizable literary contribution, as the book has continued to maintain interest since its initial publication in 1971. Stecchini, like some other prominent European academic figures of his time (Adorno, Marcuse, etc.), fled the Fascist regimes of Europe for the United States. During his time in the States, he pursued a doctorate in Ancient History at Harvard under Werner Jaeger. Stecchini wrote his thesis on the concept of akribea, or precision, in Greek thought. His Ph.D. dissertation from 1946 was entitled "On the Origin of Money in Greece." From there, he studied Greek monetary weights, the operation of Greek mints, and the dimensions of Greek temples. Through this research, his interests expanded to include the study of ancient geography and geodesy. It is assumed that around this time, Athēnaiōn Politeia was published by The Free Press, making it one of his earliest published works, if not his first ever published work. Legacy and Impact: Due to the esoteric nature of Stecchini's research, he was cast outside of the larger academic sphere, inhabiting a more academically obscure niche. Fragments of his contributions remain online, this book for instance, but also a site (now only reachable through the Wayback Machine) known as Metrum; subtitled "Metrology: The Forgotten Science" - a site devoted to the memory of Livio Catullo Stecchini. Though his work was considered controversial at the time, his influence has had a clear and lasting impact on scholars of his work. Perhaps most popularly, author Graham Hancock references Stecchini quite often in what has been his most famous work, Fingerprints of The Gods. As an author, scholar, and intellectual, Stecchini concerned himself with issues that, to this day, continue to garner interest, as they persist in challenging fundamental ideas within numerous fields of study. This book offers a rare opportunity to own one of the significant works from this thought-provoking figure. It is my belief that Stecchini's ideas will continue providing neo-scholars with food for thought for decades to come.
