Rare Antique U Thong Buddha Bronze Bust ~ Southeast Asia Click images to enlarge Description This wonderful antique bronze fragmented bust was recently acquired at an estate auction of a longtime collector in Western Illinois. It is appealing, desirable, & collectible. This antique bronze Buddha bust on wood display is from Southeast Asia in today's Thailand or Cambodia. The Buddha image was cast in a typical U Thong style. U Thong art flourished in Central Thailand in the period (12-16th century) when Khmer influence was diminishing before & during the rise of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. U Thong style was influenced by previous & contemporary styles in the region. This Buddha statue displays the typical traits of U Thong iconography: there is a small band between the hairline & the forehead. The head features small curls. The face of the Buddha image is rather square with Mon and Khmer characteristics. During the early period the ushnisha (prominent bump on the top of Buddha's head) is topped by a lotus bud. In later period (Sukhothai influence), this is replaced by an elongated flame (which is this case albeit it took a more square shape). The eyes are cast (not inlaid as often the case with images of the Ayutthaya period). We were unable to verify the exact age of this old bust. We present this piece exactly as it was when acquired. No attempts to clean this item have been made. This item shows considerable wear as seen in the photos. These blemishes do not detract from the overall appeal or beauty of this antique piece. It measures approximately 17.5" tall, 10" wide, & 6" front to back. This will make a great addition to any home or collection. The photos are an important part of the description.
