Died November 28, 1921, in Brooklyn, N. YHenry Evans Northrop was the youngest of the three sons of the Rev. Birdsey Grant Northrop (B.A. 1841, LL.D. Williams 1872) and Harnette Eliza (Chichester) Northrop. He was born in Saxonville, Mass , June 20,1854, and was prepared for college at the Hopkins Grammar School in New Haven. His father was the son of Thomas Grant and Aureha (Curtis) Northrop, a grandson of Amos Northrop (B A. 1762), who served in the Revolutionary War as a First Lieutenant under Colonel Whiting, a grandnephew of Joel Northrop (B.A.1776), and a direct descendant of Joseph Northrop, who came to New Haven from England in 1637. He was for ten years pastor of the Saxonville Congregational Church, and later served successively as agent of the Massachusetts State Board of Education and as secretary of the Connecticut Board of Education He was known as the father of the Village Improvement Society, and also started the movement for the observance of Arbor Day. His wife's parents were Jeremiah and Charity (Scudder) Chichester.Henry Evans Northrop became an instructor in the English language and literature at the Institution Thudicum in Geneva, Switzerland, a few months after his graduation from Yale. He remained there for nearly four years, and during this period attended the university, was a correspondent for American newspapers, and was an active member of the Swiss Alpine Club. He afterwards studied in Germany for about two years. Upon his return to the United States he became an instructor in French and German at the Morgan School in Clinton, Conn. In 1889 he accepted the professorship of Ger- man at the Brooklyn (N. Y.) Polytechnic Institute, and continued in this connection for seventeen years, resigning to become treasurer of the Tasker-Halsted Realty Company. At the time of his death he was secretary-treasurer of the company. He had also been president of the Villa Construction Company, secretary of the Rosedale Realty Company, and a director in other corporations. He had traveled extensively through Europe and along the coast of Africa, crossing the Atlantic forty times, and had explored the wilds of Newfoundland and the coasts of Labrador. He had delivered many illustrated lectures based on these travels. During the World War his linguistic training enabled him to render valuable aid to the Secret Service. He received the degree of M.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1892 and from New York University in 1894. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He died at his home in Brooklyn, November 28,1921, from septic poisoning. Interment was in the Grove Street Cemetery, New Haven. He was unmarried. A sister, Harriette Northrop Holbrook, the wife of Dwight Holbrook (B.A. Hamilton 1875, honorary M.A. Yale 1886), survives him. He was a nephew of Henry Marvin Northrop, ex-'53."-Yale Obituary "PROF. NORTHROP DIES TRAVELER, LECTURER Secret Service Man for U. S. Govt. in the World War.Prof. Henry Evans Northrop, 67, for 17 years instructor in German at the Polytechnic Institute, and a widely known lecturer and traveller, died on Monday at his residence, 126 E. 18th st., Flatbush, of sceptic poisoning from an abscess in an ear. He had been ill since last Tuesday. The funeral serv- ices will be held at the home on Wednesday evening at 8:30 o'clock, the Rev. Frederick W. Norris, rector of St. Matthew's P. E. Church, officiating, and interment will be at New Haven, Conn., on Thursday. Prof. Northrop was unmarried, and is survived by a sister, Mrs. Dwight Holbrook of Richmond Hill, L. I. Prof. Northrop was born in a suburb of Boston, the son of Birdseye Grant and Harriet Northrop. His father was a minister and for years was State Superintendent of Education in Connecticut. Prof. Northrop had been a resident of Brooklyn for 32 years, formerly in Jefferson ave., and had lived for years in Flatbush. He was a member of the Knickerbocker Field Club and of the Sons of the American Revolution. Prof. Northrop resigned from the Polytechnic staff 15 years ago to engage in the real estate business in Manhattan. Prof. Northrop graduated from Yale in 1876. In 1877 he joined the faculty of the Institution Thudicum, Geneva, Switzerland, later removing to Hanover, Germany, to perfect his knowledge of, German. Returning to this country in 1884, he taught in the Morgan School, Clinton, Conn., until he was called to the department of modern languages of the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. After seventeen years of service he resigned and entered the lecture field. He was invited by Dr. Leipziger to lecture in the courses he arranged for the citizens of New York. Later he lectured for the Y. M. C. A. on the battleships and at cantonments. During the World War he offered his services to the U. S. Government in any capacity desired and was put into the Federal Secret Service, for which his knowledge of foreign languages and familiarity with European conditions gained in many visits abroad admirably fitted him.
