Description: Egyptian Roman Period, Circa 1st Century BC/ADFor offer today we present a very special Egyptian faience amulet depicting a pet dog. Humans have always shared a close kinship with dogs, and this is very evident in ancient Egyptian and Roman history where many depictions of dogs in terracotta, mosaic and stone sculpture are known. Less well-known are these amazing Egyptian faience amulets made during the Roman period, an example of which we present here. This adorable little dog, perhaps a Maltese, which is known to be a very popular breed during this period, stands in profile with his head turned toward the viewer. Made of brown faience, details are accented in yellow including an ornate collar around his neck, his eyes, and the tips of his ears and tail. The tail forms a small loop which would have been used to affix the amulet to the mummy dressing. Dog amulets are scarce and when found they are often in plain blue faience. This is the only yellow-on-brown dog amulet we have had in over 40 years of dealing. A very special amulet. There is a parallel to our example in a plain buff color in the collection of the British Museum (illustrated in the Carol Andrew book Amulets of Ancient Egypt).
