Description: Rare obsolete original insignia for the Afghan army paratroopers from the Soviet intervention era. The parachute ropes are metal bullion on felt with a stiff backing. Cloth wings. Measure approximately 2 1/4” across from edge to edge. This is 3rd Class, Type 2. Type 1 was from the Kingdom of Afghanistan, 1964-1973. Type 2 was from the Republic of Afghanistan, 1973-1978. Type 3 was from the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, 1978-1993. The current Afghanistan military does not have any Airborne units.
