Description: Wonderful lot of 7 early antique albumen photographs depicting various scenes along the Potomac River. Undated but would guess c. 1870's - 1880's. Each albumen measures approximately 7" x 9" Handwritten identifiers on reverse; unfortunately no credit to the original photographer. Photos include:Lock on the old CanalWoman seated in front of Great Falls (x2)Potomac River upper rocks at Great FallUpper PotomacPotomac River going to Great Fall - MarylandRiver Great Falls, and Rocks In good to very good overall condition, considering age. Some corner wear and damage to edges, old pin holes present in top center. Some images have faded, butstill overall very nice. The locations for the images are similiar to where noted Civil War era photographer Andrew Joseph Russell took his pictures of the Great Falls. Blue watermarks are a digital creation and not on the physical items. The color/contrast in the scanned images are the most accurate depiction to the naked eye. The ones taken on patio have been auto-colorized by my camera; and are slightly more vibrant as a result. Any questions just ask. Will ship with extra care. ---- Great Falls is a series of rapids and waterfalls on the Potomac River, 14 miles (23 km) upstream from Washington, D.C., on the border of Montgomery County, Maryland and Fairfax County, Virginia. The Potomac and the falls themselves are legally entirely within Maryland, as the state's boundary follows the south bank of the river. Great Falls Park, managed as part of George Washington Memorial Parkway, is on the southern banks in Virginia, and Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park parkland is along the northern banks of the river in Maryland. Both are operated by the National Park Service. The Great Falls area is popular for outdoor activities such as kayaking, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and hiking. The Billy Goat Trail on Bear Island, and Olmsted Island, both accessible from Maryland, offer scenic views of the Great Falls. There also are overlook points on the Virginia side. Great Falls and Little Falls (about 5 miles downstream) are named in contradistinction to one another.
