Description: RARE 19th Century New Bedford Signed James D. Driggs Whaling Harpoon With Sheath For sale is a rare 19th century Toggle Whaling Harpoon made and signed by James D. Driggs of New Bedford. His Initials JDD is present on the Harpoon part.He was a blacksmith or shipsmith from 1876 to 1902. His shop is now in the Mystic Seaport Museum.Much can be found to document his work history and place in the Whaling industry in the 1800's. The Harpoon is a Toggle flip style, 32 1/4" inches long including a 7 3/4" inch head. Has signs of being used many times. Signature initials stamped in head are very clear, with some surface rust at flared base.Please look at photos and ask questions before bidding. If you have ever been to Mystic Seaport MaritimeMuseum in New England than you were in the shop this was made in.. Comes With Original Oil Cloth Sheath.
