His reign is often remembered for the founding of the city of Cổ Loa, which became the capital of Âu Lạc. The story of King An Duong is steeped in myth and legend, blending historical facts with folklore, and one of the most famous legends associated with him is that of the Golden Turtle. According to legend, An Duong was a capable and wise ruler, but he faced constant threats from the neighboring kingdom of Triệu (located in what is now southern China). In the face of these threats, An Duong sought the help of the Turtle God (a powerful mythical being) to strengthen his kingdom and ensure its protection. The Turtle God appeared to the king in the form of a golden turtle and gave him a magical weapon — a crossbow that would make him invincible in battle. The Turtle God told him that as long as he used this crossbow, his kingdom would be secure and undefeatable. With the power of the crossbow, An Duong's forces easily repelled invaders, and his kingdom seemed invincible. But An Duong's reign would soon be overshadowed by a series of unfortunate events. His daughter, Mỵ Châu, played a central role in the unfolding tragedy. An Duong had arranged for his daughter to marry Trọng Thủy, a prince from the enemy kingdom of Triệu. Trọng Thủy pretended to be loyal and loving, but he secretly harbored plans to betray the king. While An Duong was distracted by his confidence in his magical weapon, Trọng Thủy, with the help of his father, managed to steal the secret of the crossbow's magic. He tricked Mỵ Châu into revealing the location of the crossbow, and with this knowledge, he destroyed the weapon. Once the magical crossbow was rendered powerless, the kingdom was vulnerable, and An Duong's enemies were able to invade. Trọng Thủy's betrayal led to the fall of Âu Lạc, and the once mighty kingdom was destroyed. In his grief and shame, An Duong fled to the jungle, and Mỵ Châu, devastated by the betrayal and the destruction of her father’s kingdom, also took her own life. Some versions of the story say that in his sorrow, An Duong encountered the Golden Turtle once more, who had originally given him the crossbow. The turtle, now appearing as a divine creature, took pity on the king. In some versions, the Turtle God punished An Duong for his arrogance in trusting the magical weapon too much, while in others, it simply gave him a sense of solace in his failure. The story of An Duong and the Golden Turtle remains one of Vietnam's most famous myths, often symbolizing the themes of betrayal, the impermanence of power, and the consequences of relying on external forces rather than one's own wisdom and judgment. The tale is embedded in the collective memory of the Vietnamese people and is often cited as a moral lesson about the dangers of overconfidence and the price of treachery. Extremely Rare Document.
