Description: “Jak Mi Dreva Povidala,” by Frantisek Bilek, published by Jan Pohorely in Prague in 1946. First edition. Obscure posthumous publication of a religious story with engravings by Czech Symbolist. Bilek was a member of seminal Czech avant-garde group Sursum, along with Josef Vachal, Jan Konupek, and Jan Rudolf Adamek, among others, and his work shares with them a deeply mystical viewpoint and art that bridges both Symbolism and Expressionism. This publication presents Bilek’s private illustrated book as a collection of four loose four-panel accordion-fold fascicules, 13 of the panels with the story and artwork, all kept inside a loose illustrated paper chemise. Scarce item. In very good condition overall – interior largely clean save for a few pinpoints of spotting, cover with some scattered light foxing, some chipping to head and foot of spine. Buyer to pay for item plus shipping.
