Description: “SALUTE AUX MORTS: To the Memory of Wolfe and Montcalm.”[The parade of the armies of Wolfe and Montcalm, who fought and died, with equal honour to victor and vanished, at the capture of Quebec, is to be the crowning episode in the Pageant which the Prince of Wales will witness at the Tercentenary Fetes.]+ The outstanding event of 1908 was the Quebec Tercentenary. The three hundredth anniversary of the founding of Quebec by Champlain was to be celebrated in part by a huge military review, [over 13,000 soldiers]. H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, later King George V, was to take the salute. The Toronto Brigade, [QOR, 10th Royals, and 48th Highlanders], was invited and gladly accepted. The Queen’s Own had to be limited to one battalion of ten companies. + The Battle of the Plains of Abraham, also known as the Battle of Quebec (French: Bataille des Plaines d'Abraham, Première bataille de Québec), was a pivotal battle in the Seven Years' War (referred to as the French and Indian War to describe the North American theatre). The battle, which began on 13 September 1759, was fought on a plateau by the British Army and Royal Navy against the French Army, just outside the walls of Quebec City on land that was originally owned by a farmer named Abraham Martin, hence the name of the battle. The battle involved fewer than 10,000 troops in total, but proved to be a deciding moment in the conflict between France and Britain over the fate of New France, influencing the later creation of Canada.Illustrator: Edward Linley Sanbourne, from British Punch humor/satire magazine, July 22, 1908, pulled from the magazine, not a modern reproduction. Size 8 x 10 1/2 inches. Condition: excellent -- bright and clean, the page has been humidified and flattened for best appearance (and for framing); the backside is blank. I have other hard-to-find original Punch cartoon illustrations for sale; combine orders with no extra shipping fees.Punch, a magazine of humor and satire, ran from 1841-2002. A very British institution renowned internationally for its wit and irreverence, it helped to coin the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration. QUESTIONS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME.
