They fired it after every Union victory. They whooped it up loud and clear every hour for 24 hours on the day the war ended. Nobody complained about the noise. Description:Offered her is an incredibly rare & highly desirable original Cleveland Grays leather cartridge box that survived the famous tragic Cleveland Grays Armory fire of 1892. Not many did! It most likely saw action in the Civil War & probably was present at the Abraham Lincoln & James A. Garfield funerals held on Public Square in Cleveland, Ohio 1865/1881. It also may have been at the 1893 Columbian Exposition (Chicago World's Fair) as President McKinley's escort & President Garfield's March 4th 1881 inauguration since the Grays served as his official honor guard escort (SEE OUR OTHER LISTINGS FOR THE GARFIELD LETTER TO THE GRAYS!). Cleveland Grays or City Guard Cartridge Box without Shoulder Strap or Sling. Black leather box with nickel plated brass "CG" monogram mounted to front flap. The box measures 6 1/2" x 1 ½" x 4 1/2" (5" including brass finial). Faint number stamp on reverse that appears to be a "62". Near complete with all 3 brass finials/stud mounts and shoulder strap retainers on reverse. Missing one leather side panel. Inner wood block has 2 rows of 9 (18 total) round holes for cartridges. The surfaces of the leather box are pretty good but the flap is dry and fragile with cracking at the hinge area & some splitting at outer edges - but is still overall intact (we are NOT opening it). It will still hold secure & strong as-is if it is not opened. There are no repairs to the leather flap. Please see pics & video for exact condition. Please enjoy the uploaded related historical info!
