Published in Paris by Thierry Frères, this rare architectural work details the monumental Alexandrine Column, erected in honor of Emperor Alexander I in Saint Petersburg. Montferrand, a renowned architect, designed the column, which stands as one of the largest in the world. This first edition features 50 lithographed plates (including 4 bis plates) with intricate details of the monument's construction.This is a first edition, and according to Brunet—a renowned 19th-century bibliographer known for cataloging rare and important works—most copies of this beautiful book likely made their way to Russia. The RIBA Library Catalogue mentions that it was originally published in eight parts. Brunet notes that there should be 41 plates and 12 vignettes in total. Despite the somewhat complex numbering of the plates and vignettes, this copy is complete, with some vignettes being counted as plates and a few additional "bis" plates included.Bound copies of this work typically sell at Sotheby's and Christies's for £10,000 - £15,000. Taking the condition and unbound nature of this copy into account, I've priced it at £4,500. Format : Large Folio (615 x 470 mm / 61.5 x 47 cm / 24.2 x 18.5 inches) Condition : The title page shows noticeable spotting, and there is variable spotting throughout, meaning some pages have significant spotting while others have very little at all. The book is unbound but remains intact, with the text block holding together well. The pages are gilt edged. The back page has a small amount of damage along the bottom.
