He expressed protest against violence and exploitation, sought to understand the place of man and humanistic values in the modern world. For example, in the cycle "25 Images of Human Passions" (1918), Masereel shows how the hero leaves prison as an adult, with an altered consciousness. He looks around, sees injustice and inequality, begins to read (apparently, socialist literature falls into his hands) and eventually organizes a strike, for which he is arrested again.
