Reid's Jackfish contract. "The price of building the line north of Lake Superior was appalling. One ninety-mile section of track ate up ten million dollars, and one single, memorable mile of track was laid through solid rock at a cost of seven hundred thousand. By the summer of 1884 John Ross had close to 15,000 men and 4,000 horses working between Lake Nipissing and Thunder Bay; every month the company sent a pay car out along the line with $1,100,000 in wages" The Last Spike by Pierre Berton, p. 270. Albumen silver salts photographs, measuring 7.5 x 4.5 inches wide, mounted onto the photographer's boudoir cards (w. "Henry & Norman Photographers, Port Arthur, Ont." printed on verso) measuring 8 x 5 inches. Prints are evenly toned and faded with light-to-moderate stains, soiling and wear to prints and mounts, mounts are slightly curved. Prints are captioned in negative "Sprague's Cut, R.G. Reid's Jackfish Contract. C.P.R." ; "Judge's Cut, R.G. Reid's Jackfish Contract. C.P.R." and the third photo is not captioned. Good. The last spike of the eastern section of the CPR's transcontinental railway was driven home near Jackfish tunnel on the north shore of Lake Superior, in May of 1885. The last spike of the western section was hammered down in the mountains of BC at Craigellachie, in November of 1885, thereby completing the monumental task of creating a transcontinental railway line to meet the 1871 terms for the colony of British Columbia to join Canada as the country's sixth province.
