Description: In the late 1800s, the island known as Martha’s Vineyard became well-known as a vacation spot for the summer, establishing numerous resort hotels and boarding houses to go along with individual cottages. The roads were dirt or sand so in 1873 a horse-drawn streetcar line was built from the steamboat piers at Oak Bluffs to the village. A 3-foot narrow-gauge steam railroad was constructed in 1874 from Oak Bluffs some 9 miles across the island. Although the railroad failed in 1895, the streetcar was eventually electrified and continued providing service until 1918.
