Description: TRACTION CLASSICS:THE INTERURBANS - INTERURBAN FREIGHTVOLUME THREEBy William D. MiddletonGolden West Books, California, 1985. Very good hardcover in very good dustjacket. Tight binding, solid spine, clean unmarked text. Illustrated. Some edge wear and tears to dj, bumped top corners. 185 pages. The book Traction Classics: The Interurbans – Interurban Freight is about the many interurbans that turned to the freight business to find extra revenue. This freight revenue allowed them to survive, and some cases prosper. At first, they carried packages on their short-haul passenger runs. Then a few lines developed and promoted the package freight business. Traction Classics: The Interurbans – Interurban Freight examines the freight business in the interurban era. Many of the interurban lines were able to expand their freight business into carload interchange traffic with connecting steam railroads. Many roads developed inline freight business with business along their lines and with other interurban railroads. Very few of the interurbans were built with freight traffic in the business plan. Despite their short comings, the interurbans combined good service and innovative equipment and operating practices, made interurban freight a surprisingly successful business. In several cases, it prolonged the life of the interurban railroad. William D. Middleton examines this important facet of the interurban era in this third volume of Traction Classics: The Interurbans. The innovative locomotives, cars and services that enable the interurbans to meet and often beat the competition of steam railroads for freight traffic. They are depicted in this book in a series of nine sections and the accompanying 258 photographs and illustrations, 81 drawings, and specific data tables. These photographs, illustrations, drawings, and data tables describe the wide range of freight cars and locomotives developed for the interurban freight service.Traction Classics: The Interurbans – Interurban Freight tells the story of interurban freight together with a detailed examination of the interurban car and locomotive technology. There are two more books in this series, Traction Classics: The Interurbans – The Great Wood and Steel Cars details the development and history of more than 30 classic interurbans from the ear of wood, composite wood, steel, and heavyweight steel cars that characterized the industry’s rolling stock from its beginnings into the 1920’s. Loc: A6StoreAdd to FavoritesFeedbackRailroads Train Traction Classics The Interurbans Freight Company Shops Electric TRACTION CLASSICS:THE INTERURBANS - INTERURBAN FREIGHTVOLUME THREEBy William D.
