Born on December 11, 1860 in Toronto, Canada, Fox studied portraiture under John Wesley Bridgman. As a commercial artist, Fox was commissioned by calendar companies and print publishers to make work for posters, postcards, and advertisements. If he was not pleased by the final painting, Fox used one of 16 documented pseudonyms to publish the work. He painted his wide range of subject matter with small brush strokes on a variety of surfaces, often from photographs.
