The top row of pearls is the tightest and measures 39cm (15.35 inches when closed on the tightest link, and measures 44cm (17.32 inches when closed on the loosest link) Each row lower is slightly longer so it sits nicely on the neck. The substance is ground to a fine powder, shaped, dyed and coated with natural pearl nacre and then a protective coating to give it lustre. The late Queen Elizabeth II had numerous sets of antique pearls in her jewellery collection, but the Japanese Pearl Choker is decidedly more modern. The pearls were reportedly a gift from the Japanese government, possibly acquired during the 1970s, when she made a state visit to that nation. The necklace was constructed for her by Garrard. In fact, the entire Japanese Pearl Suite was worn by Diana, Princess of Wales for a dinner at Hampton Court Palace during a state visit from Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Queen Elizabeth II would also later loan the suite to another member of the family: the current Princess of Wales. Kate wore the pearls for the first time in November 2017, when she was still Duchess of Cambridge. Kate also memorably worn pieces from the suite twice with the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings. Her first appearance in that combination of jewels came at the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral in April 2021.
