From the William "Jim" Thomas collection. William “Jim” Thomas was an engineer at the New Cornelia mine at Ajo, Arizona for 38 years. His position allowed him to collect minerals during the active mining operation, and during his tenure he became an avid collector of all things Ajo, and an expert in the minerals of the area. In fact, he was the co-author of the New Cornelia Mine article in the fifth Arizona issue produced by the Mineralogical Record. He amassed a collection numbering tens of thousands of specimens with the New Cornelia mine (including large suites of ajoite, shattuckite, papagoite, copper, azurite, malachite, calcite, quartz, olivenite and others) being his primary focus. But he also field collected at many other areas, particularly those that were known to produce unusual or rare minerals to add to his extensive micromount and thumbnail collections. Every Tuesday we will offer fine mineral specimens so please save us as a favorite and check back often to see the newest specimens we've added.
