In many cases, it isn't possible to make definitive statements on such matters. For instance, if a book says 1879 on the title page, it may have been published in a different year, like 1878. And even if 1879 is widely regarded as the date of the "first edition," that does not necessarily mean that a specific example with that date is a first edition. This listing is for one item, as follows: One copy of Puzzles Old and New, by Professor Hoffmann, published by Frederick Warne and Co., London and New York, 1893. Based on the date, this is likely a first edition. Condition-wise, this is overall a decent example. The covers and spine are a little rough, but not embarrassingly so. There is moderate to heavy foxing of the endpapers and several leaves toward both the beginning and end. The rear interior hinge is split, but it seems pretty "together." I notice that a little piece of the front endpapers, at the top, is missing. That isn't easy to see in the images. There is a little lack of alignment of some of the text pages (maybe one of the gatherings)—it's a little hard to describe, but it doesn't appear to be a big deal. All in all, it's a pretty solid copy. But be sure to look at the images. Hoffmann's real name was Angelo John Lewis, and he is regarded as one of the greatest authors of magic books.
