Putnam Mrs / Mrs Putnam's Receipt Book and Young Housekeeper's Assistant New

Description: Mrs. Putnam's Receipt Book, and Young Housekeeper's Assistant. New and enlarged edition Author: Putnam, Mrs. [Elizabeth H. Putnam] Title: Mrs. Putnam's Receipt Book, and Young Housekeeper's Assistant. New and enlarged edition Publication: New York: Oakley & Mason, 11 Murray Street, 1867 Description: Small octavo (19 x 13 cm.), xv, 228 pages. Index. Stated "New and Enlarged Edition". Originally published in 1849, Elizabeth Putnam's first cookbook, the Receipt Book, was enlarged in 1857, and this is a later printing of that enlarged edition. Some publisher's issued this together with a second part, titled, Second Part of Mrs. Putnam's Receipt Book, as an Assistant, for Economy and Comfort, to the Young Housekeeper, but most Oakley & Mason issues appear to have just the first section. A popular pre-Civil War cookbook, reflecting the fish and wild fowl found in Massachusetts. The work is based on Putnam's "twenty years' experience... in housekeeping", the book aims to "provide receipts which will enable one to furnish a table handsomely, at the smallest expense" (from the Preface). Includes a selection of Bills of Fare and small sections "Receipts for a Small Farmhouse" and "Directions for a Young Housekeeper". Some light stains and age-toning to text block. Publisher's gilt- and blind decorated green cloth edgeworn, and wear to head and foot of spine panel. Good. Ownership inscription and small ink stamp to preliminary blank. [OCLC locates nine copies of this issue; Bitting, page 384; Cagle (other printings); Lowenstein 739 (earlier printings].
