Description: Purple Foxglove Seeds (Digitalis purpurea) – 100+ seeds Beautiful purple foxglove is a biennial plant. It is a member of the plantain family and grows in woodland clearings and mountainsides and is an excellent garden ornamental plant. Also known as fairy gloves, fairy bells and lady’s gloves. A great plant for naturalizing. The leaves are covered with gray-white hairs that impart a downy texture on the upper surface and a wooly texture below. In the second year an upright flower stem with smaller leaves are produced from the center of the basal leaf clump. The foxglove spikes normally grow 3-4 feet and attracts beneficial pollinators. It is deer and rabbit resistant. Foxglove self-seeds readily. Foxglove are very poisonous to dogs, cats, and humans. Foxglove contains naturally-occurring poisons that affect the heart, specifically cardenolides or bufadienolides so use care in planting. Planting: Foxglove seeds can be sown in indoors in early spring or directly sown in the garden in the summer. Use good quality seed starter mix when sowing indoors. Soil temperature should be 60-65 degrees F. Foxglove normally takes 14-21 days to germinate. Lightly press seeds into to soil, but do not cover the seeds. Foxgloves require light to germinate. Keep evenly moist until seeds have germinated. Once seedlings emerge, provide plenty of light on a sunny windowsill or 3-4” beneath grow lights. Seedlings can be transplanted when they have 2 pairs of true leaves.
