Description: Staffordshire Childs Red Toy Plate PUNCH & JUDY Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c 1890 This is a whimsical and rare childs transfer printed plate, circa 1890, originally part of a complete childs tea set for doll house tea parties. The plate measures 5-3/8 inches in diameter, decorated in a rich cherry or country red. The plate features the fabulous characters from the Punchinella puppet show (dating back to Italy in the early 17th century) of Punch, Judy and baby surrounded by an aesthetic display of flowers and geometrical whimsies. The pattern name is "Punch". It was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The plate is marked with pattern name and maker. This plate is in great condition, with no chips cracks or repairs. Light overall glaze crazing consistent with age. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect it...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are misplaced or not all aligned neatly, and there is runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm. Offered as is, as shown. Antique English transferware in the Punch and Judy pattern is quite scarce and highly sought after, particularly in this great shade of red. We have also listed a companion wares to mix and match.
