Description: Puebloan Ruins of the Southwest offers a complete picture of Puebloan culture from its prehistoric beginnings through twenty-five hundred years of growth and change, ending with themodern-day Pueblo Indians of New Mexico and Arizona.Aerial and ground photographs, more than 325 in color, and sixty settlement plans provide an armchair trip to ruins that are open to the public and that may be visited or viewed from nearby. Included, too, are the living pueblos from Taos in north central New Mexico along the Rio Grande Valley to Isleta, and westward through Acoma and Zuni to the Hopi pueblos in Arizona. In addition to the architecture of the ruins, Puebloan Ruins of the Southwest gives a detailed overview of the Pueblo Indians lifestyles including their spiritual practices, food, clothing, shelter, physical appearance, tools, government, water management, trade, ceramics, and migrations.ARTHUR H. ROHN, former chair of anthropology at Wichita State University, is now an independent consulting anthropologist and archaeologist who lives in Tucson, Arizona. He has written numeous articles and several books, including Rock Art of Bandelier National Monument (UNMP).WILLIAM M. FERGUSON is also the author of several books on Southwest and Mesoamerican ruins, including Mesoamerica'sAncient Cities (UNMP.) Various students of Southwestern culture history have argued that many ideas and practices have diffused out of Mesoamerica to influence the development of Puebloan culture through time. While there is very little secure evidence for such influences other than agricultural plants, ceramics, and trade, we can see Mesoamerican inspiration in the creation of this book. The passion of two Kansas lawyers (and politi-cians) for Mayan archaeology led them to fly their private airplanes during weekends and other days off over the jungles of the Yucatán Peninsula and adjacent areas of Belize, Chiapas, and Guatemala in order to photograph from the air the spectacular ruined cities of the ancient Maya. The resulting photographs then inspired William M. Ferguson and John Q. Royce to produce two books teaturing their photographs and studies: Maya Ruins of Mexico in Color and Maya Ruins in Central America in Color, both published by the University of Oklahoma Press.Inspired by those two books, Ferguson looked in new directions, and his publisher at the time, Luther Wilson, suggested he employ his talents, especially for both aerial and ground photography, on the ancient ruins of the Colorado Plateau. At that point, Ferguson enlisted the help of lifetime professional Southwestern archaeologist Art Rohn, and the two began an intensive accumulation of information and photographs that ultimately led to publication of Anasazi Ruins of the Southwest in Color by the University of New Mexico Press. This current volume is a revision of that first work. The purpose of this book has always been to offer the general public a complete and informative picture of Puebloan culture from its prehistoric beginning through roughly twenty-five hundred years of growth and change ending in the culture of the modern day Pueblo Indians of New Mexico and Arizona, from Taos in the northeast along the Rio Grande Valley to Isleta, then westward through Acoma and Zuni to the Hopi Pueblos. We have combined color aerial and ground photographs, maps, settlement plans, drawings, and charts with detailed descriptions of ruins, artifacts, and historical developments to make this picture both thorough and easily understood. We have tried to emphasize as much as possible those ruins that are open to the public and that either may actually be visited or at least viewed from nearby. Even though we have omitted many excavated and published ruins because they cannot be visited, those covered here provide a complete picture of the history and culture of the prehistoric and historic Puebloan peoples of the American Southwest. The original version of the book would not have been possible without the full cooperation and assistance of the United States National Park Service.
