Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) MISSION WORK IN NATAL For many centuries—indeed, ever since the beginning of the Christian era—missionary work on the continent of Africa has been carried on by Christian teachers and preachers. Many good men have given their lives for the cause, but others have always been found ready to take their places and carry on the work. Here we see the simple service of a Protestant mission, in Natal. The strange head-rings of the men in the congregation proclaim them Zulus. The labourers in the field of Livingstone and Moffat have evidently succeeded in earning the respect, if they have not yet greatly moved the hearts, of their congregation. It is to be regretted that in Africa, perhaps, more closely than in any other part of the world, the white "spirit-seller," the purveyor of arms and gunpowder, the speculator who lives upon the life-blood of the natives, ever follows upon the track of the missionary, and shows how widely Christian practice may differ from Christian principle
