Description: Entitled "Cavendish Common" this 1942 drypoint etching is by John Taylor Arms (1887-1953}, one of the most celebrated American printmakers of the first half of the 20th Century, who was noted for his etchings of medieval architecture Measuring 6 3/8" x 14 14 9/16" image, 101/4" x 18 3/4" sheet, it is signed and dated in pencil lower right, dedication inscribed lower left , second state, (published state) edition of 150, Loose, printed on cream paper, it is in excellent condition with no holes, tears, stains, foxing, or toning. English Series # 10,. Catalogue Raisonne Fletcher #370. Regarded as one of the artist's most outstanding works, this print was awarded a number of prizes including Noyes Memorial Prize for best print at the 27th Annual Exhibition of the Society of American Etchers, New York,1943; the First Prize in Black and White Section at the 12th Annual Exhibition of the Irvington Art and Museum Association, 1945; and the First Prize in Black and White at the Annual Art Exhibition of the Bridgeport Art League,1945.Examples of this print can be found in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, British Museum, and others The New York Public Library is the major repository of Arms’ work, but he is also represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Massachusetts; the Brooklyn Museum, New York; the Fogg Museum of Art, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois; the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio; the Detroit Institute of Arts, Michigan; the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth, Texas; the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Los Angeles County Museum, California; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Academy of Design, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, California; the Seattle Art Museum, Washington; the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian American Art Museum; Washington, D.C.; and the Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts.
