Description: The Principles & Practice of Modern Surgery 1867Robert Druitt "New and revised American from the Eighth Enlarged and Improved London Edition" *Not for the faint of heart, many images are graphic. This American publication was from the 8th enlarged and improved London edition. 1867 was only two years after the end of the American Civil war, and a decade before surgeons began to routinely scrub up. Those conditions may explain the numerous amputation instructions. For those in the medical field, it is fascinating to read about the common procedures performed almost 160 years ago. Tracheotomy tubes (closely resembling those in use today) were used for diphtheria, acute laryngitis "when suffocation is imminent", with some controvsery around their use. There is a scholarly examination of the pros/cons of ether and chloroform. Altogether a remarkable read.
