Mapping Out The Assault On Umnak- One option of the Aleutian War tour is a side trip to Umnak Island, home of the famous Fort Glenn airfield that was used to launch strikes against the Japanese during World War II. The island is deserted now, except for the once bustling military compound, and the wild herds of horses and reindeer. Hanging On In Time And Memory- The giant hanger at Fort Glenn on Umnak Island in the Aleutians was once a welcome signt for U.S. airmen returning from raids on Japanese positions farther out the chain on Kiska and Attu.
