When we dyno tune engines we really adjust two main things ignition timing and carb jetting. Incorrect ignition timing can cause poor running, loss of power, spark plug fouling, running hot, bogging and loss of max rpm capability. When you adjust your Ignition timing it changes the point in crank rotation when the engine starts applying pressure to drive the crank down with the most torque and power. You want the most pressure being applied at the perfect point. From the time your crank rolls over past top dead center to 20° after top dead center is the area where the engine applies the most pressure to the crank. If you start the push to late you won’t take advantage of the leverage of the crank angle and you don’t transfer the power from the piston to the crank efficiently.
