Description: Postcard Title: Brigade Camp, Salisbury Condition: Bruised corners Reverse: Unused Date: About 1903 Printing/Photo: Unknown Comments: Great early cardBefore the Great War the Salisbury Plain camping-sites were used mostly by Volunteer Battalions. These had quite a variety of uniforms and some favoured slouch hats. As their title suggests, VBs were not part of the Regular Army and comprised men with civilian jobs who paraded at a local drill hall once a week and were expected to spend two weeks at a summer camp. The Haldane reforms of 1908 included the setting up of a Territorial Force into which the VBs were absorbed, with standardisation of uniforms. This postcard was published in 1903 - Australians weren't on Salisbury Plain until 1916. It is one of the very earliest series of cards (if not the first) showing military activity on the Plain. The camp may well be Park House or Lark Hill, each about 13 miles from Salisbury.Reference: Terry Crawford, author, "Wiltshire and the Great War" Australian Buyers: Paypal or Direct Deposit Overseas Buyers: Paypal Insurance: (Definitely Please Read) While Australia Post is extremely reliable, on most occassions, no responsibility by this seller will be had for uninsured items.
