Description: 1957 Poster/Cartel Offset Lithograph Announcing the First Festival Casals by Lorenzo Homar Following is the translation of the description from the University of Puerto Rico’s Museum of History, Anthropology, and Art website **************************************************************Poster announcing the first Festival Casals in San Juan, celebrated in El Teatro de la Universidad de Puerto Rico in 1957. A blurred image of the Maestro Casals, playing his cello, appears on a light, green-yellow background. The text is superimposed on the image in the colors wine and black. The Casals Festival in Puerto Rico was a classical music festival by the famous celloist, orchestra director, and composer, Pablo Casals (Vendrell, España, 1876-San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1973) who moved to the island in 1957. The inaugural concert took place on the evening of the 22nd of April in 1957 in the Teatro de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Over the years in which the Festival was celebrated, numerous international artists visited. The Maestro was in charge of the Festival sharing his music with the world until his death in 1973. In 1956, motivated by Don Pablo Casals’ visit to Puerto Rico for three months, Homar sketched his profile and his hands over the cords of the cello, thereby officially proclaiming the Maestro a guest of honor in Puerto Rico. It was this very same sketch that Homar used to design the poster for the first Festival Casals. Since its founding in 1957, Homar maintained a close bond with the Festival Casals for which he designed ten posters – 1957, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1982, 1985, 1989, and 1996. The majority of the designs for the Festival were expressly approved by Don Pablo, as testimony to the profound friendship that each came to cultivate in the wake of Don Pablo’s arrival in Puerto Rico. ************************************************************** Dimensions: Image: 24 3/16 × 17 11/16 in.
