Description: THIS AUCTION IS FOR AN UNUSED VINTAGE POSTCARD TITLED "INTERNED WAR SHIP 'GEIER' HONOLULU, HAWAII, NOW THE USS CARL SCHURZ"APPROXIMATELY 3.5 inches by 5.3 inches in size. Minor blemishes, otherwise a clean item. ................................. Two months before the United States entered the war on February 4, 1917, the Honolulu fire department and U.S. troops stormed the Geier and the Locksun , claiming to have seen a fire. In fact, the authorities feared that the Germans would sink the ships themselves. The Americans discovered that the Geier had regularly relayed radio messages and had also sent messages in English that could incite Japan, Canada, and Mexico against the United States or against cooperation with the U.S. Navy. The German crews of both ships were taken prisoner and sent to Fort Douglas near Salt Lake City , where the men of the auxiliary cruiser Cormoran , who had sunk their ship in Guam , were also taken .Following the U.S. declaration of war on 6 April 1917, the United States Navy took over Geier , refitted her, and commissioned her on 15 September 1917 as Schurz (named after the German-American Carl Schurz ). Classed as a gunboat, Schurz escorted four American submarines from the U.S. West Coast through the Panama Canal to the Caribbean until early January 1918. She then took over patrol duties off the east coast of the USA and in the Caribbean from her new base in Charleston . On June 21, 1918, she was rammed by the escort steamer Florida near the Cape Lookout Shoals lightship off the coast of North Carolina . One crew member was killed. The Schurz sank three hours later.
