Port Saïd, EGYPT - Fresh Water Reservoirs - Suez Canal - Sweet Water Canal

Description: Port Saïd, EGYPT - Fresh Water Reservoirs - Suez Canal -: Port Said is a city that lies in north east Egypt extending about 30 kilometres (19 mi) along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, north of the Suez Canal, with an approximate population of 603,787 (2010). The city was established in 1859 during the building of the Suez Canal. Port Said was founded by Sa'id of Egypt on Easter Monday, April 25, 1859. There were no local resources here. Everything Port Said needed had to be imported: wood, stone, supplies, machinery, equipment, housing, food and even water. Giant water storage containers were erected to supply fresh water until the Sweet Water Canal could be completed. The Sweet Water Canal, the same as Fresh Water Canal, is a modern canal of Egypt, running along the northern periphery of the now dry distributary of the Wadi Tumilat and extending from Port Said in the north all the way to Suez in the south. Construction was completed in 1863, designed to supply drinking water to nearby citizens. During its construction, remnants of an ancient canal, the Canal of the Pharaohs were discovered which ran through the ancient Egyptian cities of Pi-Ramesses, Bubastis and Pithom. This ancient canal that was discovered has been hypothesized to have been a portion of an ancient "Suez" canal which extended from the Nile to the Red Sea and for which accounts were offered by three early classical writers -- Aristotle, Strabo and Pliny the Elder. This Divided Back Era (1907-15) postcard is in good condition. Jesee Beharm Port Saïd. Jesse Behar, Port Saïd. T 60.
