PORT CRANE (FENTON), NEW YORK, TOW PATH, CHENANGO CANAL, Eastern Ill REAL PHOTO

Description: Fenton is a town in Broome County, New York that is in the northeastern part of the county, northeast of Binghamton. It was originally name Port Crane and was first settled around 1788. It was formed from the town of Chenango in 1855. The name was changed to Fenton, after Ruben Fenton, a governor of New York, in 1867 but a small settlement within Fenton carried on the name of Port Crane, up to the present. The former Chenango Canal (1834-1876) passed through the west side of the town, following the Chenango River. The town developed and prospered with the advent of the canal. While the canal was supplanted by the railroads, the town was bypassed by the trains which affected the town’s growth. At the 2010 census, the population was 6,674. This is a Real Photo published by “The Eastern Illustrating Co.” and captures the tow path along maybe the canal. It looks more like a road beside the river. It is post marked, but the date is unreadable. The card is in good condition with intact corners and edges and a clean, clear image. The reverse is written on and is neat and clean. The Studio of Eastern Illustrating Co., in Belfast, Maine, is one of the best-known publishers of real photo post cards depicting scenes of New England and New York. Founded by photographer R. Herman Cassens in 1909, he and his staff produce over 30,000 real photo cards printed in small lots to the thousands. Cassens sold his business in 1947 and died in 1948. The collection of 40,000 glass plates went through several hands but was ultimately donated to the Penobscot Marine Museum where organizing and archiving of the plates are being done. The colors on the images are a more neutral SEPIA, than the scan.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible. Corrections appreciated.
