Description: Pinus ponderosa - Ponderosa Pine - 12 to 14 inches tall Mature Height: 30 feet Aspect: half shade to full sun Hardiness Zone: USDA 3 One of the most common and tough pines along the western half of the United States, the Ponderosa Pine thrives in a wide range of conditions and produces sturdy branches and long needles in a well-formed conical shape. Ponderosa Pines are one of the most heat and drought tolerant of all Pine trees but are also extremely cold hardy. Their range extends from the hot deserts of Mexico into the freezing mountains of Canada. The needles are very long - usually over a foot long on mature trees - and a light green to slightly gray color. Trees growing in moist locations with good soil have very dense foliage while trees growing in dry, exposed climates tend to be more open with their needles spaced farther apart. Most states require that all the soil be washed away from the roots for field grown plants which also gives us the opportunity to trim the roots into good form. The tops are pruned as needed depending on the species and size of the tree. Our handling time is 1-3 business days occasionally we skip the day before a holiday since plants will be sitting at the post office anyway.
