John Logan was a notable figure in the world of poetry, recognized for his lyrical prowess and contributions to the literary landscape. Born in Red Oak, Iowa, in 1923, Logan pursued his education at Coe College and the University of Iowa, earning a BA and an MA respectively. His career in poetry began in the early 1950s while he was teaching English at Notre Dame University. Logan’s work is characterized by its lyrical quality and often explores themes of existential humanism, influenced by the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. His poetry is known for its casual immediacy, yet it is deeply metaphysical and meditative at its core. He was also involved in the academic world as the founder-editor of the poetry magazine Choice. His first book, A Cycle for Mother Cabrini (1955), showcased his intense religious feeling and classical education, akin to that of Robert Lowell. Over time, Logan’s focus shifted from the spiritual struggle between flesh and spirit to more personal and less ethereal concerns. Among his most acclaimed works are The Bridge of Change and Only the Dreamer Can Change the Dream, with the latter winning the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize in 1982. Throughout his career, John Logan produced fourteen books of poetry, leaving a lasting impact on American poetry and paving the way for new forms of lyrical expression. He passed away in 1987, but his legacy as a “ballet for the ear” continues to resonate. We welcome all offers and inquiries, more photos and information available upon request.
