Description: John Rabone & Sons Pocket Tape Measure: A rare example of a sewing or pocket measure with a brass case and a linen tape. With inches on one side and fractions of a yard on the other, this is a very early piece. The tape end has frayed and the end piece is missing but the automatic spring release works albeit not with the power it would have once had. The company was founded in Birmingham in 1784 and continued through to the early 20th C. The diameter is just 1.75” (45mm) and is around 0.5” deep(12mm). I have not pulled the measure out to its full extent as that may damage this piece of history. It weighs only 50 grams!
