Between 1985 and 1991, Plympton created short films, some as short as 15 seconds, that highlighted his unique talent more effectively than his longer features such as The Tune and I Married a Strange Person. Plympton's early experiments with various animation techniques like cutouts, cel animation, and stop motion eventually led him to develop his personal style: using colored pencil drawings on paper to depict bizarre, metamorphic transitions that build up to absurd conclusions. His sketches feature surreal elements like eyes sliding up foreheads, elongated lips, rotating mouths, distorted bodies, and exploding heads, all created in a loose, scribbly manner. Plympton's animation technique is not as polished as traditional animators, as he typically uses only four to six drawings per second compared to the 12 to 24 drawings per second required for full Disney-style animation. Despite this, his offbeat short films such as "Your Face," "25 Ways to Quit Smoking," and the quick 15-second "Plymptoons" made for MTV, showcase his talent as an entertaining and highly original filmmaker. These short films are not rated and are suitable for all ages, although the unconventional imagery may be unsettling for young children.
