Description: Plate number CVI from Francesco Inghirami's 1845 Monumenti per L'Intelligenza della Storia Della Toscana Compilata ed in Sette Epoche Distribuita (see title page of the book in the pictures for this listing). This plate is a color drawing depicting six examples of military dress among the foot soldiers of the Italian Republic. A rough translation of Inghirami's description of this plate, as excerpted from the original book (see last pics in this listing), is below: Foot soldiers from Republican times exhibited here by me to show that at that time the military costumes did not have any uniformity. Number 4 is taken from the work of Signore Bonard, Costumes, no. 14; Number 2 is from a marble bas-relief existing in the main cloister of the S S Nunziata, depicting Guglielmo Berardi, an equestrian soldier and one of the Florentine captains at the time of the French republic, who died at the Battle of Campaldino. Number 1 is taken from a fresco existing under the loggia of the Church of Cercina near Florence;Number 6. Citizen taken from the fresco of Cercina named above.Number 5. In this figure we can see what was the iron armor of those who were assigned to the fake(?) battle of the Pisa Bridge game.Number 3 is from a picture painted by Prof. Sabatelli, representing the soldier Ferrucci's surrender of Volterra. This is an antique print removed from the original book. It has some discoloration and other signs of age. Please examine the pictures carefully as they are part of the description. The measurements are roughly 7-1/8" x 9-7/8". Smoke-free home. Sold as is. No returns.
