Description: This listing is for an original 1940's Planters Edible Oil Company poster in English and Yiddish advertising "Sheindele The Chazente" and Planters Kosher peanut oil. Jean Gornish, who was better known as Sheindele, was a female performer (cantor) of Jewish liturgical music. Jean Gornish was born in 1916 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and according to Wikipedia had signed an exclusive contract with Planters by the early 1940s. The Center For Jewish History at Yeshiva University has a copy of this poster in their collection that they date to circa 1940. According to the Spring 2008 issue of The American Jewish Legacy Quarterly, Sheindele was also "a well known Yiddish theatre performer". Sheindele is discussed in the hardcover book by Ari Kelman "Station Identification: A Cultural History of Yiddish Radio in the United States". The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia also has a copy of this poster in their collection. This poster measures 11" x 17". It is in very good condition with some staining near the top and light foxing throughout. The text is in green and red with a photograph of Sheindele. Some interesting notes from the poster. 1) Planters kosher certification was "under supervision of Rabbi Hirsch Kohn of New York". 2) At the time Sheindele was "being heard in New York exclusively On Planters Program over Station WEVD" on "Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Eve. at 8 o'clock - 1300 on your radio dial".
