The cover was produced to mark the 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF PRINCE PHILIP'S VISIT TO PITCAIRN on 22 February 1971. The cover is appropriately franked with Pitcairn's $1.00 "Prince Philip" definitive stamp of 1977, one of a small number of stamps portraying the late Duke, the Consort of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, to whom he had been married since 1947. Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, made 637 overseas visits in his lifetime of service. In May 2020, Prince Philip announced his retirement from Royal duties, after more than 22,000 public appearances, and 5,500 speaking engagements in 65 years.
