Justicia carnea is a low-growing, shade-loving perennial shrub that is a great choice for mixed perennial beds as filler or to bring color to shady nooks and corners. It has large, pointed, oval, dark green foliage and a low, rounded growth habit, maturing at about 24 to 28 inches tall. As the nights begin to warm, a large fountain-like plume of bright, clear, medium pink, long, slender, petal-like bracts curves outward from the ends of the branches. The bloom cycle is long, beginning in the early spring and lasting until early winter in tropical climates. They lend great interest, texture, and color. Easy to grow, with lots of rewards for little effort. They can be grown indefinitely as potted plants and can be adapted to grow indoors with supplemental lighting.
