Pierre de Bourdeille was a sixteenth century French aristocrat who, in this rather risqué book, charts the 'gallant' lives of the French aristocratic women. The bespoke bookplate was Gordon P. Smith's; he was a noted collector of erotic bookplates and was referenced in the Dee MacDonald's 'Purple Pillow Book' (2003). The volumes were given a bespoke designer binding by Jayne Tandy, with the invoice for her work loosely inserted.
